Minshull Lock Queue – Again

We were planning to get a bit further today, but the usual Minshull Lock queue stopped that. I’m assuming that it is usual. My evidence has a 10 year gap in it, but the locks seemed as slow and the queue was certainly as long. So my assumption is that it is normal. At least it gave Nick and me time to have a shower.

Of course, the weather started bright but soon turned cloudy and then more suitable for the ducks. We ended up dodging the rain for most of the day. During the middle of the day, there were some impressive cloud formations, but I was just thinking about how they looked wet!

At lunch time, we moored just after Venetian Marina and Cholmondeston Lock. I needed a quick trip to the  chandlery. First to source an extra engine mount locking screw, and second to replace the spare alternator belt I replaced first thing this morning. My morning engine check habit paid off again. The belt was looking seriously frayed. I think the effects of my extended trip in May and June may be showing up as extra wear and tear.

I can completely recommend the chandlery at Venetian Hireboats. Their range may not be as extensive as some, but the staff are incredibly helpful. They didn’t have exactly the right screw. But they knew exactly what was needed, and managed to fashion a suitable replacement with careful use of an angle grinder. Brilliant.

After Venetian, we made our way slowly past loads of moored boats. We passed yet another example of the Black Pearl. This seems to have become one of the most popular boat names. I have seen at least 10 examples.

We turned south at Barbridge Junction for the quick sprint down to Hurleston Junction and the Llangollen Canal.

When I cam past in June, I remember looking wistfully at the line of 4 locks marching up the hill. And now I was back.

This lock flight is a great opportunity to satisfy the excitement of a paddle gear nerd. Here is the unusual example on the third lock up.
